Amazing Results

Yesterday when I went to see my cousin at "Lush" I bought a seaweed fresh face mask, BB Seaweed it's called. Well I used this product and as you can see for yourself this product produced amazing results! I am so impressed I want to buy the company!

Who would have thought that some seaweed, cleansing kaolin, antiseptic honey, calming aloe vera and rose absolute could do this to my skin? If only I'd known this a few years back, imagine the possibilities!

Love is a bomb... a bath bomb in this case.

Today was a fun filled day spent with two of my sisters and my beautiful daughter. We started off at the Farmers Market, then off we went to visit our cousin who manages a divine bath and body shop. Naturally we all played with the products and this particular bath bomb caught my eye. Each bath bomb has seven roses in it and it smells wonderful.

After "playing" in the store, we all went out to a leisurely lunch, my cousin went back to her shop and the rest of us went to the movie "When in Rome."  I enjoyed the movie but does love happen that way in real life EVER?
This is my question of the day!

Olympic Torch

If only I had of known that this torch was going to be at the college and I had a chance to get my photo taken with it, I sure wouldn't have froze my butt of a few weeks back! This here is the president of our college, he carried the torch somewhere near the Walterdale bridge, not across the bridge where I was situated with my camera.

I'm glad to have had this opportunity to have my photo taken with Dr.Wayne Shillington and the torch. This year he will be retiring after 12 years of being in charge of NorQuest. I'm hoping that the next president will be able to do at least half of what Wayne has done for this college, he's done so much and advanced this educational institution in many ways.... plus it's not everyday one gets to have their photo taken with the Winter Olympic torch!

Adorable

I was at the mall today shopping for a swim suit with Cheryl, she's got a class trip to West Edmonton Mall tomorrow with her classmates. We could have looked at 500 swim suits and none would have done what she was looking for, she is after all 14 and going to be swimming with her peers. So no new swimsuit for Cheryl but the trip to the mall wasn't a complete waste of time

I couldn't help myself when I saw this adorable little suit. This is for my granddaughter who will hopefully fit into it come summer. Her expected date of arrival into this world is early May and I'm so excited. I try not to buy things when I'm out and about, today my self restraint was weakened... what can I say? This is my first grandchild which makes this wee purchase totally justifiable!

Not to worry Shayne and Sandy, the makeup is only for contrast, I won't allow her to get into Gramma's makeup until she's at least 2!

Chili

I made chili over this past few days. I spent the time to cook the navy beans adding only what I chose to, this way I ensure that they are low sodium. I also did the same with the kidney beans. Today I added a can of tomatoes with zero sodium, spices, and hamburger from the farm which is extremely low fat. I think that this is the best chili I have ever tasted, it's so wholesome!

It was worth the effort of baking my own beans (not that much of an effort with a crock pot mind you!) and from here on in, this will be the way to go for me when I choose to make a pot of chili.

Sticky Notes

I LOVE sticky notes! The one thing that I've never loved about sticky notes though is that I will stick them on my desk, on my wall, or anywhere I can stick them but when I go to find one of them sometimes I can't seem to locate it. It's almost like I needed a sticky to remind me where my other sticky was...crazy making I tell ya!

Well Windows 7 has solved my sticky note dilemma, I now have all of my sticky notes on my desktop and I love it! I can keep track of my personal appointments, my assignments, meetings, etc. and I don't have to remember where the sticky is.... ahhh can life get much better?

A Nice Surprise

Today Herb had to come to the city for some parts for his big truck. I like it when his truck breaks down because I get to see him! I know that sure doesn't sound nice, but oh well... whatever works! :-)

We went out to Doan's for a nice dinner and now we're going to relax and watch some TV. I deserve a night off my books, give my brain a rest AND House is on tonight! My one and only show that I watch only this time I'm going to watch it not recorded a week after the fact. A night with my guy and my favorite TV show...  life is good! :-)

Sunday Drive

I went back to part two of my nutrition seminar today and afterward decided to take a Sunday drive to see what I could see. I was on side-roads, mainroads and stopped off at a few places. I took quite a few photos today, so many that I had trouble choosing only one photo tonight.

I decided on this photo, there's something about this picture of the church which I love. The church is St Georges Ukrainian Catholic Church, the sign says  "A Monument to the millennium of Christianity in Ukraine."

Saturday Night Baking

Tonight I was hoping that Herb was going to make it to the city for a visit, that was our plans. As it turns out he was on his way to the city and got a call for a job. After a quick call to let me know he turned around and headed for work. I was a tad bit disappointed although I understand, after all work is work.

I was going to dive into reading my textbooks and changed my mind. I record House on PVR and as it turns out this past week it was a repeat which I've seen before so I decided to bake cookies.

Now I am refraining from having a cookie, if I have one I'll want ten of them so why bother starting, especially after being in a nutrition class for four hours today! So here they are, a shot of my "bored" cookies, next maybe I'll clean the house, or maybe not. I think that the textbooks are going to win out tonight, I think I'll see what I can learn on a cold Saturday night... or maybe I'll start one of my projects or essays. Decisions, decisions... :-)

Winter in Alberta

Tonight I was out at a meeting, afterward a very good friend and I went out for a tea and salad. I decided since I was out anyways I might just as well pick up my groceries for the week. I like to go late night shopping, hardly anybody is in the store and I don't have to walk a mile to the store in the parking lot. Well tonight when I went into the store it was pretty mild weather wise, I came out of the store about 40 minutes later and here I was back in winter... just like that in the blink of an eye and it's winter once again. Only in Alberta!

Tools

I purchased some new tools the other day and set them aside forgetting all about them. I spotted them today and wondered how I could forget about a new pen and pencil set. I am an avid note taker while I'm in class, when I'm at home it is seldom I pick up a pen. I have now realized how much I have come to rely on my computer. I type my notes, essays, I print off my directions to get anywhere in the city, I even type most letters and send them via email. I don't even write cheques, why with internet banking and the cost of ordering cheques?

I believe that handwriting is a dying art,  I believe that some children today are getting so used to typing. I'm not saying all children don't have nice handwriting. I guess that the children whose writing I have seen lately is what concerns me. The writing is barely legible, "chicken scratch" as one teacher back in my early days of education would have called this type of writing. I remember the children that were made to write for hours on end so that they would learn to write legibly. Some succeeded, while others continued to sit and write, I bet those who sat for hours are grateful today for computers!

I now have my new tools, (which write wonderfully I must add),  out and ready to write and write I shall.

... did I just date myself? lol

Membership

I am now a student member of the ACSW, Alberta College of Social Workers. What does this mean to me? It means that this is all beginning to get so real, my educational journey is now not only books anymore. I asked myself why this might be and the only thing that comes to mind is that I am now a "member," I am a part of a larger body. I am going to be a Social Worker and I will belong to this association... who would have thought?

Blue Skies

Today when I was taking my photo of Grant MacEwan, which used to be a College and now is one of our Universities, well something just didn't seem right. I looked at the photos a few times to realize what it was, the skies were blue today, a beautiful blue at that! I haven't seen skies this blue in some time now or maybe I have but haven't noticed them as much as I did today. It seems that it's been gray or grayish most days, today was a wonderful, welcome sight!

Saving Money

Last week I purchased a magnetic cork board, this week it was on sale for $10 less than I paid for it. Tonight I went back to the store where I purchased the cork board and they refunded me my $10. Seeings how I had "saved" the $10, I thought that I'd see if they had one of these printers still on for half price, they did so I bought one. While I was saving the $50 from the printer, the ink was buy 2 get $4 off AND get a free package of HP paper. Now how could I resist these savings?

So now would somebody please explain to me how I went back to the store to save $10 and I walked out spending $100?  Do NOT take "how to save money"  lessons from me EVER! :-)

Ice Festival

Tonight I went to the Ice Festival in Old Strathcona. There were some amazing sculptures and this one of the Giraffes was the one which took first place in my eyes, even though the judges rated it second. First place had melted quite a bit so I couldn't quite tell what it was. It is rather unfortunate for the sculptors that we have had unrealistic warm weather lately, it's been on the plus side which is extremely rare here in Alberta, especially in January... not that I mind a mild winter such as we're experiencing.

The newspaper today said that there were sculptors from Russia, Sweden, Africa, New Zealand, and Canada partaking in this festival. The pair who sculpted the giraffes live in Tanzania but were former residents of Alberta, they said that "the mild weather was more of a nuisance than a major problem."  Now that's the spirit!

Old Strathcona Farmers Market

Late this morning as I sat at my computer my phone rang, it was my oldest son asking if I'd like to go to the Farmers Market, I gladly said yes. I don't get to see my son and his wife that often as we all lead very busy lives and I haven't been to the Farmers Market in a very long time.

The Market is not too far from where I live, I just always seem to forget it's there as it's only open on Saturdays. The Market offers
“a touch of the farm in the heart of the city" where fresh vegetables, fruit, baking, meats, fresh eggs, cheese and ethnic foods are offered. There's  a wide selection of crafts, jewelry and art as well.

There is also live music, today I heard this band strumming on the banjo, there was also a harp and violin which preformed magnificently, and my psyc instructor from last year was there with her grandson who plays the cello.

It is quite the experience to visit the Market and naturally with being at the market I made a few purchases which included homemade black bean salsa, fresh guacamole, small whole wheat and caramelized onion pitas, chicken garlic sausage, pepperoni, and even some carrot dog treats for my sons dog!

Tonight for dinner I make a pitaza.  I used one of the small pitas, added salsa, guacamole, fresh spinach and topped it off with a small amount of cheese,  I put my creation in the microwave to melt the cheese, and talk about delicious! I am looking forward to making the farmers market a new weekly stop when time permits, it was that wonderful.

Excellent idea Shayne, thank you!

Smile, You're on Julie's Camera!

Today I went to pick up my sister Julie to go and visit a cousin who is from our home town up North. My cousin is in the hospital and just had some major surgery. I'll be damned if I didn't get lost going to pick up my sister! Oh, I did find my sisters place eventually and we finally made it to the hospital and I had such a good visit while I was there.

I went on Wednesday afternoon to visit with my cousin and I had asked her if I could take her photo, she said no so I respected her wishes. Today I told Julie not to bother bringing her camera because Val, my cousin, didn't want her photo taken. Somehow Julie persuaded Val to let her take a photo... Julie has this way of talking anyone into allowing her to take their photo. I'm not sure how she does it but I'm going to have to take lessons from her.

I've chosen to do this photo of Julie this way, I was hoping to get her from all angles to see what her "angle" is but I guess that I'm going to have to spend more time with her and learn from the pro, this photo didn't tell me much except that she was pleased with the photos she took!

Doan's

After a long day in classes I decided to get soup for supper. There is this Vietnamese restaurant, Doan's, not to far from where I live and they have awesome soup (Pho). While I was waiting for them to prepare our soup I couldn't help but notice this interesting decoration. I was going to ask what the bamboo signified around the vase like decoration but forgot to, it might mean something, it might just be a part of the decoration... I"ll have to ask next time I am in the mood for Pho... unless anyone knows what this signifies.

Olympic Torch

Although this isn't the greatest shot, I got to see the Olympic torch pass right before my very eyes tonight! I came home, packed up my camera and asked Cheryl is she wanted to come to watch the Olympic torch pass by. I'm glad she came with me, it's always fun when we do things together although it seems whenever the two of us go anywhere together something happens.

Tonight I was on Jasper ave. coming home and a light turned red. I didn't see where the line was to stop and ended up stopping right in the middle of the intersection, at least I didn't run the red light! lol

I see now what my sister means, get a tripod she suggested a while back... that will be my next purchase so that the next time I see an Olympic torch I'll be able to get a better photo! :-)  Actually I will get another opportunity to see the flame once again on Friday morning, I should be able to get a much better shot in daylight, or at least I'm hoping to!

Camera Shy

Today after I was done with my classes I had a friend come over to give Cheryl some help with her math. I feel that it's best to get the help than to struggle and not understand. I went to take a photo of the two working together and up came the hoodie and down went Cheryl's head. I did show her this photo and she gave me permission to post it so all is well in my home tonight.

It's just too bad that I couldn't get someone to "help" with my required reading, take notes and brief me on the main components. I have so much reading this semester, way more than last year and first semester... so off I go to read and make my notes!

Tranquility

Cheryl, my niece, bought me this water fountain for Christmas. I currently have it sitting on my nightstand but am thinking of moving it to my desk. I love the sound of the fountain trickling away but don't turn it on often enough sitting where it is.Generally by the time I get to bed I just fall in and it's lights out in no time at all.

This is the second water fountain I have, I also have one which my son and his wife bought me some years ago. Maybe I could just set one up on my desk and have one on my nightstand for evenings when I'm not so tired, that way I can enjoy some of my meditation music and listen to the water fall.

There's something about these fountains which has a tranquil effect on me, I love them so I am going to attempt to incorporate them into my hectic busy days. Tranquility and serenity, there's no two feelings such as these in the whole world!

Oilers Hockey

Both of my boys are die hard Oilers fans. It is surprising that neither of them have given up on this team, the team hasn't been doing so well. The last cup that the Edmonton Oilers won was in the 1989 - 1990 season, that's 20 years ago! The team did come close in 2006 - 2007 making it all the way to game 7 of the playoffs but couldn't quite pull it off and lost to the Carolina Hurricanes.

I was over at my middle son Derek's today and he was showing me some of his boxing day deals he purchased. As you can see he bought 8 hockey caps, the got an Oilers hoodie and a really nice Oilers spring jacket, and for amazing prices.

Now the fun will begin, I think that it's going to be another family ordeal to go out to West Edmonton Mall and collect the players signatures. I'll go but this year I want to make sure that I get Sheldon Souray to sign something for me, although I'm not sure what just yet.... ok I just want to hear Souray talk, he's got the sexiest voice I have ever heard AND he's the most handsome hockey player I have ever seen in my life! Ladies check out the link and let me know what you think!

Dare to Be Different

I was at home for most of my day, reading, making notes, doing laundry... that sort of stuff, and it was absolutely gorgeous outside, a beautiful +4! Around 9 tonight I couldn't take it anymore, I HAD to get out for a bit (spring fever set in) so where else is there to go that late at night other than good old faithful WalMart? I went under the guise of "needing" a tote to put away my Christmas decorations, the tree is still standing.

I couldn't help but browse for a while, total avoidance of coming home right away, and I came upon these darling teddy bears. Naturally an idea popped into my head and you got it, I was rearranging the Valentines teddy bears to take a photo. I know, I really should get a life, but the one I have today I wouldn't trade a thing for the old life I once had!

So here it is,  my challenge to you is:  dare to be different, go out of your comfort zone and live a little on the edge. Take some risks, (like I'm one to talk, rearranging teddy bears at WalMart!), allow your heart to love as though it's never been broken before, dance like nobody is watching, and live as though heaven is here on earth!

NorQuest Alumni

Today was the first official meeting of my college's Alumni Association. I am honored to be a part of helping build the NorQuest Alumni Association and it really is an honor that my opinion will count. I was the only current student at this meeting today, the rest of this committee are staff members and one former student. We are going to have this Association up and running in no time at all.

It is exhilarating to be a part of something which is going to be so big! This will be such a learning opportunity to see this Association grow from the ground up, after all the sky is the limit!

I was privy to some of what is going to transpire and there's some big things coming up! That's about all I can say for now... all will be revealed once the ground work is laid!

Not That I'm a Dummy...

Well here's the book which I will be reading for pleasure when I get the time between text books and essays.  I want to learn more about my camera. I wonder what they don't have out for Dummies? I'm trying to think of some odd subject... wait a second, I wonder if they have Social Work for Dummies? That sure would save me a ton of money on all those text books and an immense amount of time in reading! I'm going to have to do some investigating!
(I'd be a real "dummy" if I were indeed serious! lol)

Bicycles in the Winter

Today I couldn't believe this, some people are actually still riding bikes in this weather! Today it was about -20c down at the college, the freezing cold winds cut right through my jacket and I have a three in one coat. It was cold. I don't know how these people do it, bad enough it's freezing out there, but the roads...they're almost sheer ice in some spots.  There's also embankments or mounds of snow on the sides of the roads so this makes me wonder where they are riding. I know that it's illegal to ride on the sidewalks, so if they are driving on the roads please watch for them. I view this as not being a wise choice and I can only guess how many accidents there might be caused because of the bicycles on the roads.

Talk about ironic, tonight I almost hit a guy on a bicycle while I was driving downtown. It was dark, he was cutting across the middle of the street and not at a crosswalk plus he was dressed in dark colors. Thank God I didn't hit him!

Goodbye Christmas

Good-bye Christmas decorations, hello brand new year! Only the decorations are being said good- bye to this year...and no they're not all put away yet (I still have the tree to take down one of these fine days but I'll get to it).  I'm going to try to resolve to carry Christmas with me as much as I possibly can this year.

I love the spirit of Christmas, who says that it must only come out once a year for a few weeks? Bah-humbug to them! Choices is what it's all about and I am choosing to be the best possible person I can be and keep my Christmas spirit alive as much as I possibly can each and every day throughout this year.

Already Forgotten

I went to log in on the computers in the library today and I couldn't get in, I kept on getting "log in error." I went to the help desk and had to be relogged in through the main computers. I was only gone from December 17th until today, hardly long enough for a computer to forget me!

The countdown is on through, only four more months in classes, a two month practicum and I will be finished at NorQuest College. I will have succeeded in obtaining my diploma in Social Work and I am hoping to be in University come September of this year. With dedication and determination I know that I can do this. One essay at a time I shall have a degree in two and a half years!

Three Cute Babies

Today I spotted these cute little guys while I was at the Chinese Superstore. I wanted to purchase these three baby Buddha's and bring them home with me but this year I am going to attempt to declutter my life so I passed them by. This is going to be a real challenge for me to get rid of many of my things which I do not use, but if I'm not using them why keep them?

I figure that most of what I need I carry within me, why clutter up my world with needless trinkets. I'm not going to get rid of all of my things, just some... it's a start by just not purchasing things I see and think are cute!

Jesus Christ Superstar

Tonight I went to the Jubilee to see Jesus Christ Superstar with Johnny, his daughter and her husband. I had never seen this performance but I remember hearing the songs years ago. This musical was quite interesting, it's not anything that I'd rush right back to see again but none the less I'm glad that I went.

It was unfortunate that there was a rather large guy sitting in front of me, anytime he'd bend over to talk to his girlfriend I couldn't see a thing. Thankfully he didn't seem to have too much to say. The lady sitting next to me I think has ADD, she couldn't sit still and that became rather annoying. I managed to finally zone her right out. The performance received a standing ovation, and yes I too found myself on my feet, it was worthy of this gesture.

The funniest part of tonight, I went to the parkade to leave and I couldn't find where I parked! I knew that it was on level one so I toured around there, no car. I must have walked in a circle because somehow I found myself at the exit of level two so down the stairs I went back to level one. There was this one couple, she was calling out to him and he was responding, the two met up and I asked them if they too had lost their car... that they had. I told them jokingly "Good, I don't feel quite so bad now!" We all had a good laugh.

Now what will I find to take photos of for the next 363 days of this year? Hmmm... this could become a challenge this year, one that I am up to I might add!

Days Gone By

This first day of 2010 I am sitting and reflecting on this past year. When I first set out to do this Project 365 I never realized just how much fun I would have doing so. I have taken photos of everything from donkeys to toilet paper rolls and almost everything in-between.

I had decided some time ago to print out this project and insert the pages into scrapbook albums so that I could look back every now and again and reflect on days gone by. Before today I had up until about the end of April printed and tucked away neatly into its album. Now I've been copying, pasting, editing, and printing for my morning and what fun I'm having reflecting on my life over the course of this past year.

I have come to the conclusion that I might not lead a high profile life, I do have something to say about almost everything (I think that comes with being female), and that I have had one heck of a fine year in 2009. Not only have I completed this project, I have also met some wonderful people in doing so. As I have mentioned in previous posts I can't find it in me to walk away now, I just got a new camera not that long ago and I'm actually learning a bit about how to use it!

So cheers to all of you, I hope you are all enjoying the first day of your New Year!
