Halloween 2010

Today was beautiful! I think that we got up to +12c which is awesome for this time of year. I'm glad for the kids who were out trick or treating tonight. I didn't get all that many children at my door, but I did manage to get a few photos of some of them.

Here was a vampire, a funny witch, the other girl was one of those young teen idols whose name I can't remember and the fella in the back, I'm not so sure what he was but these kids were a fun bunch.

This next little one was a devil, her grandmother never allowed her mother to be the devil when she was a child so now the mom allowed this cute little one to be whatever she wanted. Sometimes I think that we live vicariously through our children.

Then this little one showed up, she got scared of Abbie and turned to run away. I held Abbie and these two became fast friends. I had to smile when mom seen my camera, she asked me if I was a professional photographer, I had to tell her the truth and told her that I was! Just kidding. :-)

And naturally I saved the most adorable little one for last, she was the cutest little butterfly I've ever seen in my entire life!  My precious granddaughter came over early and was she so adorable, I'm still smiling just seeing her photo!

Happy 1st Halloween precious Elyssa!

Happy Halloween

Today I stopped off at my middle sons house and this is what he's got set up next to his stairs. I thought it was pretty cool, they used up all of the leaves which were left on the ground and made the Halloween watch man.

My next stop was over at my oldest son and his wife's place. I went over to watch my little princess while mommy and daddy decorated their lawn for Halloween. They outdid themselves but I love what they did. Now I want to go and get some lawn decorations for my place after seeing what my son's did, I'll wait until next week when the Halloween decorations are on sale for super cheap and I'll have them for next year.

Here's some of my oldest sons lawn.

I can just see the frightened little ones coming over here, the figures all talk and in a rather scary way. They're quite loud too so I hope that none of the little ones get too scared, they'll run away crying... Shayne I hope you video some of the kids walking up to your door, this I want to see!

Wishing you all a wonderful Halloween!

Back In Business

Today we, Herb and myself, were out shopping and came across this 13' ladder. It was on sale for one heck of a good price so we picked it up. I really like that this ladder folds up and I'll be able to store it almost anywhere.

Now I'll be able to reach the top of my stairwell, the painting can commence... there's only one wee problem, I'm scared of heights. So now it's either get up on this ladder and get the job done, pay somebody to do it or just leave it as it is. I want to do this myself and attempt to get over my fear of heights, hopefully I'll have time within this next few weeks. If (WHEN) I can get up this ladder and paint the stairwell, look out... next I'll be hanging Christmas lights! :-)

MJ

So if it's supposedly illegal to purchase and smoke marijuana why is it legal to sell all of the paraphernalia? I feel that our government should make up their minds...it is or it isn't alright to smoke MJ, none of this in-between stuff. I oppose it yet many disagree with me, we're all entitled to our own opinions thanks to freedom of speech.

Blah

Today was one of those blah days, the sort of a day where I didn't even want to get out of my PJ's... so I didn't. The hot water tank was replaced today so that's a good thing. I have a roof over my head, a warm bed to sleep in thanks to an electric blanket, there's food in my fridge, my dog loves me, my house is clean for the better part, so why am I so darn blah? Do I take some things in life way to serious? Does my happy, positive cheerful self need a down day from time to time? Could it be the gray weather? I have no idea but I'm sure that after this homework is done and I get a good nights sleep that I'm going to be back up to my perky and grateful self in the morning... I'd better be or I'll go and get some counseling from one of my colleagues, let them use me as  guinea pig. ;-)

Irina, this photos for you. It's not a lot of snow but nonetheless it's snow.

Winter Already

We've had snow for a few days now, I was hoping that it would go away for a while but unfortunately it's looking like it's here to stay. We generally don't get our first snowfall until around Halloween and sometimes it stays, sometimes not.  Now all that we can hope for is that the -30 or -40 days don't hit for some time to come. That's when our city still moves but not nearly as fast as when it's like it is now sitting at about -3. Sometimes it'd be nice to be a bear, sleep the winter away but last time I checked in the mirror I seen a human looking at me so it's time to buckle up and hang on, we're in for a ride!

Water, Water Everywhere

Arrrrrgh! I knew that the hot water tank needed replacing and had it in mind to call someone to come and do it later this week or next week... the tank pushed up my plans a tad bit. I didn't notice the water in the basement until I went down to put some clothes in the dryer at about 11:00pm, I was up until 5am trying to clean up the water and seen I was fighting a losing battle. I never knew where the water main was to shut off the water and trust me now I know.

I find it odd that when houses are built that there is the floor drain but why in heck are they not sloped enough for the water to run down them? Would this make to much sense?

What a mess, but oh well, the floor needed a good washing anyways I suppose.  Now it's going to be fun to replace the drywall which was saturated, let the games commence!

My Daughers Art

Tonight I had another wonderful evening, my daughter prepared a meal for our family unit and that girl can cook. I'd never had a meal prepared by her before and I am extremely impressed at what Michelle has learned. Another talent of Michelle's is her artwork, she loves to paint and tonight I took a few photos of some of her artwork which decorates her home. This top photo is two of Michelle's paintings which hang at the end of her hallway.

This next photo is a painting she did for her living room. The lighting in this photo doesn't do her painting any justice but I love her painting so I'm posting it just the same.

The nice thing about being an artist is that you can choose colors which match your decor. The photo above brings together and compliments her choice of furnishings in her living room.

This next photo does the artist no justice, the pictures have a 3d dimension to them but they way I shot the photos one can't tell. Some of the silver thin lines in all three of these paintings is wire of some type and protrudes out of the painting, it's a super cool concept.

Michelle you do wonderful work, I am so proud of you my girl!

The Game

What a fantastic night! When we arrived we went down to where the Oilers went onto and off of the ice. This photo was taken just outside of their dressing room. Directly behind me are the doors to their dressing room, what I would have given to go back into that room!

The lights went low, the music blared and the derrick was lowered. The Oilers skate through this derrick before every home game. My son was telling me that during playoffs they have flames shooting from the top, I'd love to see that one day!

A quick chat with the big guy upstairs before the game?

Game on! The game started out with Gagne taking a 2 minute penalty for goalkeeper interference only 53 seconds into the game. That was nothing to worry about, Eberle scored 1:22 into the game. We were up one goal and the game looked good. This was all within just over a minute into the game!

To make a long game short, the final score was 6 - 1 and not for us.
I really enjoyed the game, it was such a treat to get out and the seats were, well plain out awesome!

The "date" I had was with my oldest son Shayne. Words alone can't express how I felt when he dropped me off at home last night, that 'boy' of mine has made me one proud mama. He is such an amazing young man, and I love him dearly.

Shayne, we're going to have to do this again sometime... your treat? ;-) Thank you so much for the wonderful evening, my only complaint is that our time spent together went way to fast!

Now that's die hard Oilers fans, even after the slaughter we can still smile. Why you might ask... just cause we love our Oilers that much!

Game delay

I'm way to tired tonight to post photos of the wonderful evening I had at the game, tomorrow's another day and I will post then. I just went through the numerous photos I shot and I got some pretty good ones, especially considering I only had my P&S with me, no cameras allowed.

Going to The Game

I won tickets to the Oilers game tomorrow night and not nosebleed tickets neither... you know the ones that are so far up in the stands that your nose bleeds from the altitude, the cheap tickets.

The tickets I won are Club Seats, they must be good because they include exclusive membership in the All Star Club (whatever that means), oh I like this part... private entrance to the Coliseum... hmmm I wonder what I might find there to take photos of.  Oh and the list goes on....coat check services, I should take a coat or two, there's a few I'd like to have checked out. :-)  And there's more... Concierge Service, as well as food and beverage service to our seats. These two tickets are valued at just over $500!  SWEET seats! I hope that we win and if not oh well I'm sure that I can get some awesome photos.

I even have a date for tomorrow night, it's pretty easy to do when I have an extra ticket! Ya, Herb's too busy to come to a game so what the heck. I've learned quite a bit about this man who will be picking me up. I know that he's a die hard Oilers fan and has been since he was quite young, I also know that he's a lot of fun to go out with, he's not at all shy and he's extremely handsome. This is going to be soooo much fun!

I hope that you all have a fantastic weekend, mine is looking like it's going to be a blast!

More on Flowers

What to say about my poor flowers? I guess that sometimes it's best when I say nothing at all.... WAIT a minute, no way... I can't not say at least something here, you'll all think that I'm ill or somethings wrong! lol

So here it is, I was getting out of my car and couldn't help but notice these poor dying daisies, I think that they're daisies, yup they're daisies... (don't you just love google? It can validate that you know what you think you know but are too tired to be certain of it!) These poor little things are barely hanging in there but they're still here so they deserve a photo. For some reason they reminded me of "Flowers for Algernon", I don't know why... they just did.

Christmas Come Early

I love Christmas lights, the way they light up the streets and put joy and happiness in the air... but in October? What the heck is up with this, we're not even passed Halloween yet... slow down world, just slow down!

Yellow

On my way home it was nice to see these yellow flowers beautifying the sidewalk, it's amazing how a little bit of color in my world can put a smile on my face. I googled the color yellow and here are some interesting ideas (facts?) about this beautiful color:

"Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. Shades of golden yellow carry the promise of a positive future. Yellow will advance from surrounding colors and instill optimism and energy, as well as spark creative thoughts.
How the color yellow affects us physically
Stimulates mental process
Stimulates the nervous system
Activates memory
Encourages communication"
Well color my world golden yellow, whenever I go to write another exam I'm bringing yellow flowers with me!

Freaking Out

Do you ever get that freaked out feeling? I sure have that feeling transpiring right about now after spending about 7 hours attempting to prepare for a mid term in my Research in Social Work class which I write in a few hours and I don't feel like I know the information well enough to go and write. There's so many definitions, the terminology is crazy making and why in the heck do they have to make it so confusing for to begin with? It's research for crying out loud, not brain surgery!

I don't want to be a researcher yet I understand the theory behind wanting Social Workers to know how to do research. I don't want to write academic journals and I don't want to write this stupid exam. In playing this out I have choices, I can go and write this exam and pray like crazy that I pass, if by chance I don't pass I can always pull up my mark through other assignments in this course, worst case scenario... if I fail this course I won't be the first person in history to repeat a class, nor the last... or I could walk away waving a white flag. I'm too determined to EARN this degree though, but trust me the idea of walking away has popped into my head a few times.

The reality of being a student, it's not all glory and high marks... it's blood, sweat and tears at times, frustration, aggravation, and every other "tion" that I can think of but in the end, damn rights it's going to be worth it. I'm not doing this to fail, no siree so off to bed, get in a few hours of sleep, up with the birds and review my study notes once again and off I go to write this stupid exam! I'd say wish me luck but I don't believe in luck... thanks just the same.

I hope you all have a fantastic morning and guess what, I'm going to go and if I can't dazzle them with brilliance I'll attempt to baffle them with bullshit! Ya, I'm going to have some fun with this one! :-)  I just "talked" myself better, how about that! lol

Precious

Today my granddaughter was Christened. I think that she looked just like a sweet, precious little angel, my pride and joy . What a special day, I'm sure am one proud grandmother and an extremely proud mother... I am blessed.

Rarely a Dull Moment In My World

If your wondering what I'm doing with this transit set and are at all interested in a story, grab a cuppa tea and sit down... this could take a while.

I got up this morning bright and early, feeling much better after being cooped up for this past two days and down to the store I went. This one particular store had these transit sets on sale. Why might I want a transit set and what the heck is it you might ask, k here it is... it's not for me, I didn't even know what this was until my boyfriend asked me to pick one up for him, it has something to do with surveying. The fun part was in getting this set... here's how it went:

I arrived at the store at 7:55am, the store opened at 8am. The others who were waiting for the store to open were in their vehicles, I waited right by the doors. Promptly at 8am the store opened, somehow this one man got in front of me so I was the 2nd person in the doors. The transit sets were a few steps away from the door and there was only 3 of them, it was one of those door crasher sales. I got my hands on one of the sets and two men each grabbed one. A male sales associate came over to me and told me that he needed the set I had my hands on. I told him no, I was purchasing it. He said that he had a phone in order and the lady paid for it with her credit card, excuse me... I don't think so. I told him that he couldn't do that, he said that he did and I then politely (I was polite at this point) asked him if that was the case could I get a raincheck. I told him how I was the second person in the store, I had my hands on this set before the guy behind me did and asked him why he chose me to take the set back from. He took me over to his computer never responding to my question and was checking something out.  It then hit me that this was an extremely sexist thing to do. Why me instead of one of the men who were twice my size? I asked to speak to the manager.

I told the manager what had transpired, SHE did what she felt she could do, which wasn't too much of anything except write down my name and contact information should one of these sets become available ever again which was highly unlikely. I told her that I felt that her MALE salesman was extremely sexist in his choosing whom to take the set from, why me and not the 3rd person in the store? Was it possibly because subconsciously it was due to the fact that a small female won't cause a scene? That man should not have judged a book by its cover.

After conversing with the manager and getting nowhere I told her that I was going to make a quick call, I pulled out my cell phone and called my boyfriend. He suggested that I call the press because yes it was an extremely sexist thing to do. I mentioned to him that it was a good idea to call the press, they always love a good discrimination story... the manager was hearing all of this. Herb (my bf) mentioned that it was a door crasher, you have to be there to purchase this item, HOLY YA! I told him that I'd call him back. I went over and picked up one of their fliers, I went back to the manager and pointed out that in black and white is said "IN STORE ONLY", this was clearly false advertising and if that was the case not only did I have a good story for the press regarding discrimination, I also had another spin on this as being false advertising. They couldn't accept call in orders for an in store only purchase.

To make this long story shorter, the same man who took the set from me brought it back, I asked him why he chose me to take it from to begin with. He said that he just took it from the first person he approached, I asked him that if subconsciously he could have chosen me because I'm a female, he said that he'd NEVER do that... I told him that he just did and I also mentioned that this would be an excellent situation to write about for one of my university papers on gender discrimination. He apologized and as you can see I have this transit set in my living room.

Yup, rarely a dull moment in my world...now you see why Herb loves me? ;-)

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

I didn't do much of anything once again today, I managed to get out to my patio to take my photo of the day though. My son and his wife gave me this lovely bench. It's quite a heavy bench which is a good thing, it won't fly away in a windstorm and I have to give it some TLC (tender loving care) in the spring but once I strip the wood down and restain it it'll be as good as new. I love this bench and I know that I'll use it a lot next summer, thank you Shayne and Sandy.

The Flu Shot

Last night I went for the flu shot, they put three types of the flu vaccination into one. I've had this shot for the past five years and other than a sore arm I've felt fine. Last night I also got the pneumonia shot, this is the first time I've ever had this one and I think that this is the culprit. I've been so sick all day, I haven't even bothered to get dressed, I've slept most of my day away and still feel like crap. And here I thought that these shots were supposed to keep you healthy, not make one sick.

If I never got sick I sure wouldn't appreciate it when I feel healthy, everything happens for a reason and looking at from this perspective this quote now makes sense...

"Tis healthy to be sick sometimes."
Henry David Thoreau

... not that I like it one bit but such is life.

Just One More Nut

Somedays ...yup, this is me. I worked the early morning shift today and on my way out the door I finally remembered to take my apron with me. My daughter was in Vegas a while back and she brought me this apron which I just love!

There's something about flipping eggs and feeding people that I love, I think that it's an escape from the books and the routine which I seem to have established plus I have a passion for cooking, I have for as long back as I can remember. For 8 1/2 hours today I left the books behind and had tons of fun, well until clean up that is. The customers where I work are fantastic, it's almost like an extension of my living room. I can be away for a month or two and do a shift and it's just like I never left. Everybody should have a job just like this one, work when you want, be appreciated and do what you love to do!

Beautiful Autumn Day

Today was another gorgeous day, although the late evenings and early mornings are cool the days seem to be exceptionally warm for this time of year and I'm enjoying
this immensely.

I see that to capture a sunset I have to be watching somewhere between 6pm and 7:30pm or I'll miss it. I snapped this photo on my way out to spend time with my granddaughter while mommy and daddy went to prepare for her Christening next Sunday, it was around 6pm and the sun was slowly slipping away.

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take the time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."
-   Elizabeth Lawrence

I think that most of my fellow bloggers have watched the leaves turn and have captured some magnificent photos in doing so. I've enjoyed seeing the fantastic colors fall offers through all of your lenses, what an an array of scenery and cascade of colors. Beautiful I say, absolutely beautiful!

Thanksgiving

I have so much in my life to be grateful for and today did nothing but add to my list of blessings. We had a fantastic dinner...the carrot cake was a big hit and the kids left happy, they take home leftovers which I always ensure are abundant.

I was surrounded by people I love and my little princess is one of my special blessings. I am extremely thankful that I have tons of love in my life.
I think that it's fair to say that we all had a fabulous day and in speaking for myself this is exactly what I feel like right now...

We're not too used to having company and Abbie is worn right out tonight!

On that note it's time to get to bed, tomorrow it's back to class and the same old routine. ...'Nite.

Sunset Sunday in the City

Scott has inspired me to stop and watch the sunsets and take photos of them as well, it didn't take much convincing as I LOVE sunrises and sunsets. What a treat today was over on Scott's blog, he's posted 10 magnificent sunset photos, amazing shots!

I snapped this sunset on Friday evening, I was about to turn onto the freeway and was stopped at a red light. I only had my PandS with me but I'm pleased with the way this photo turned out...when I leave this house and have the time I'm going to have to remember Ricks ABC rule, always bring camera! :-)

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Canadian friends!
Cheers!

10-10-10

October 10, 2010. Rather interesting date I must say, not that anything spectacular transpired but a while back I agreed to take part in shooting a photo or some photos with 10-10-10 in mind. David was the brainstorm of this one!

I've had quite some time to think about this and at first I was going to post my 10 favorite people, I put that one out of my mind once I realized that I might offend a few people. Then I was going to post 10 different shots of me, that would have been way to much of me, and then it came to me. I shot two photos of the two things which have occupied most of my time lately.

This first photo is, as you can see,10 cans of paint. I have used a lot of this paint (and then some) since I moved into this house at the end of July. There's still painting waiting for me, it's not going to go anywhere. The house is livable so the painting is on hold for now.

This next photo is why the painting is put on hold for now. These are the top ten books I read, some when I have time, others are mandatory for classes, the "assigned" reading.

Between painting, books and everyday life I keep busy, very busy but I don't think that I'd have it any other way! :-)

I Found It!

Tonight I went out to pick up a few groceries to start preparing for Thanksgiving dinner which I'm hosting on Monday. When I was leaving the grocery story I found it... I found the Pumpkin Patch! It's a good thing that I had my camera with me, otherwise nobody might believe me. :-)

Yard Work

Today was another beautiful day. It was somewhere in the 20s, warm enough to throw on a tank top and shorts and get out and do some yard work. I cut the grass, more like used the lawnmower to pick up the leaves, and used the weed whacker to get all the trimming done before the snow flies. I had company outside, she wasn't much help but she sure enjoyed the gorgeous day.

Abbie my little helper, she did a fine job of guarding her leaf!

SSSSICK

“You are never too old to set another goal
or to dream a new dream."
C.S.Lewis

I spotted this amazing car in my travels and had to laugh at the plate, the only thing I see "SSSSICK" about this car is that I'm not the one driving it! I've been told that I look good in burgundy.

A Grandmothers Prerogative

Tonight was a special night for me, I spent some time with my granddaughter and had the pleasure of tucking her in. I learned tonight that at 5 months old she doesn't need any help, she tucks herself in! I had to laugh, she kept on covering herself up, blankets over her head and was turning bedtime into play time with me. She won, after about 15 minutes of this game and her precious smiles I picked her back up and held her until Mommy and Daddy returned home.... a Grandmothers prerogative.

More Carrots

When I got home today I unpacked the car, barely being able to lift the bag of carrots I brought home and guess how I spent a few hours tonight... yup, cleaning carrots and baking. These carrot, pineapple, and bran muffins are delicious. I even made them low fat and the taste is out of this world. I'm going to attribute this to the fresh carrots and naturally the ingenious chef! :-)

(This is a fantastic way to get your bran, even those who don't like bran will never know it's in these muffins.)

Wash and Freeze

I was in a bit of a bind today, we had about 50 lbs. of carrots to freeze and it was starting to get late. Herb suggested that we put them in the washer to clean them to speed things up a bit. At first I was hesitant but relented, I put a few old towels in with the carrots and amazingly enough it worked! What a time saver this was. Not all of the carrots got done, we have at least another 100lbs. We're giving away a bunch and I'm taking home a gunny sack full and will can or freeze them there. Next year, NOT SO MANY CARROTS... enough already! lol

Sunset Sunday

"It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream."
Bern Williams
Right on, my photo isn't sideways, it's all good in my corner of the world today! I shot this photo last night, the skies were amazing after our magnificent day, I'm not wanting to go home... but I will.

A special thanks goes out to Scott for inspiring my Sunset Sunday shots. If you haven't checked out his site as of yet, I suggest you do, there's some wicked shots over there!

Amazing Weather

Today was an unbelievable day here at the farm. The weather was amazing, we reached a high of at least 26 which is so odd for this time of year. I'm not complaining, not one little bit.

I was out for a few hours taking photos and this one is my favorite I think. I did it again, took tons of photos but tonight I'm only posting one. It's Sunset Sunday tomorrow so I'm going to save the beautiful sunset I shot tonight to post tomorrow.

The Beautiful Country

I drove out to the farm and along the way I snapped a lot of photos, once I arrived here there was so much more to take pictures of. Once again I can't narrow it down to one photo so here's some of my favorite ones from today.

The Athabasca River in the Fall

This one's for you Sherry, the heart tree in autumn.

A few more "new" vehicles. I'm going to have to ask if he buys these just to have me take photos of them! They do make for a nice photo though.

And last but not least, the farm, a shot from the patio.

I didn't even notice the deer until I was browsing through the photos, I was looking at the big picture, engulfed in the beauty, and forgot about the smaller picture. If you enlarge this photo it's much easier to see the deer.

And I'll leave you with this quote:

"Believe in yourself, your neighbors, your work, your ultimate attainment of more complete happiness. It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a harvest in Autumn."
- B. C. Forbes
