An Acquired Taste

The morning after I arrived in Adelaide I went to the cafe for the breakfast brunch which was included with the cost of my room. I'd heard about this Vegemite, my middle son told me that I should try it so I made myself some toast and applied the Vegemite like I would peanut butter and I took a bite.

Immediately I scanned the restaurant to see if anyone would notice if I deposited the bite in my mouth into a napkin, the place was packed so I toughed it out and washed this nasty taste down with my tea. I was done with this piece of toast and learned a valuable lesson... never try anything without first asking the locals. I have since learned that this is to be applied sparingly, but it's too late now, the taste has left me never wanting to try it again! Vegemite is definitely an acquired taste.

  1. I have to laugh. It remains me of something my mother (for whatever reason) made me eat as a child. She would buy those little packets of yeast, (like a chunk of cheese) and she would smash it in some real whole milk and have me drink it. All I knew was it was good for me. Or, so she said....your idea of spitting it out, so brought back that icky taste! Live and learn, right?

    1. Karen that sounds nasty, the concoctions our mothers used to give us... what were they thinking? lol And you bet live and learn, no more of this stuff for me, nor my children, nor my grandchildren, that's how nasty it tastes! Like I said, it's an acquired taste for sure. Cheers.

    1. Horst it's what children here are raised on, like our children have peanut butter, Australian children have Vegemite... why I have no idea! lol Cheers.

  3. The "concentrated Yeast extract" would catch my attention. That stuff can't be good!

    1. Red if you'd like to read a bit more on this here's a link, and I sure thought it was nasty... but then again I'm not an Australian who was raised on the stuff. (I shudder to think of that one bite! lol)

  4. LOL....Vegemite is on my list of common australian foods that pop in in my transcription work from time to time, along with Weet-Bix, Tahini, and others! (I think they live on Weet-Bix though!!)

    1. Joyce it's hilarious but I noticed a lot of the Weet-Bix here, like seriously who wants that when there's tons of other 'good' cereal on the shelves? I'll have to check and see what this Tahini is, that one is new to me... I don't shop a whole lot other than fresh foods at the market and the odd new hot beverage which is totally addicting. I'll post about it one of these fine days... I wonder if I can order it by the caseload back home, hmmm. lol Cheers.

  5. That's unfortunate Darlin ... Vegemite has a very strong taste and you only need to put a thin scraping on buttered toast. Maybe you could try just one more time before you leave because I'm sure you would like it.

    1. Dianne, I've since heard this but that first taste has me scarred for life! lol Who knows, I might, small might, give it another try before I leave.

  6. I would've noticed the fine print - 'concentrated yeast extract' - and known right away that it should only be used in a baking recipe !

    1. LOL Rick, it depends how much you like the people you're trying to feed this to in disguise, I don't think the taste can be masked, no matter how much sugar one adds to it! I didn't go out and buy some of it, you know the small packets you get when you go out for a breakfast, generally we get peanut butter and jam, here they offer Vegemite and jam packets, if ever in Australia, trust me, stick to the jam! Oh, I've got a question for you, will email you k? ttyl Cheers.

  7. Yes! If you spread it like jam (jelly?) or peanut butter it must come as a bit of a shock!

Some of the other comments here come close to treason!

If you ever get to the UK, you should try Marmite - similar but better (and many Australians would consider that treason as well!)

    Cheers - Stewart M - Australia

PS: thanks for the visit and kind words.

    1. Stewart no worries.

And yes, it was a shock to the tastebuds to say the least, and to top things off I was suffering from jet lag of all things. I've heard some of the locals say the same thing about your Marmite, you're right, treason indeed!

Have a good weekend my friend, take care and may God bless and be with you and your family.
