Sunset Sunday... On a Monday

Whenever I see footprints in the sand it reminds me of the poem "Footprints". Naturally I had to take photos of footprints, this one I think I'll enlarge and frame when I'm back home... as a reminder of the times I've been carried.

A Walk In The Park

Today was a mellow sort of day, I went to the Central Market, got lost, found my way home eventually, then decided to go out and take some photos. I've missed being out there with my Rebel, there's something about my camera which brings me joy.

I decided to go down to the park I was at before, I didn't feel much up to getting lost again, and am I ever glad I went back.

Today has been quite the day, but at least my internet is working!

On the way home from Uni we were walking and I felt water dripping on my leg, I looked up and it wasn't raining, nor was there water dripping from the eaves. I felt it again, looked all around and still couldn't see anything... finally I said to my roommate that someone must have had a water-gun and was messing with me, I think that she thought I was a wee bit crazy. As it turned out my water in my book bag opened up and I had a flood in my bag. I stopped to empty it, hoping my P&S was alright. I shot a photo and this is what I captured...

Feeling At Home

I'm starting to feel a bit more at home here; classes started today and it was a chilly sort of day. It was chilly enough that I needed a jumper (sweater) and silly me, I didn't pack too many warm clothes. What was I thinking? Right, I wasn't!

The dual purpose fleecy, a souvenir and it keeps me warm... now that's thinking eh?

Sisters and "Chicken"

Tonight I was chatting via facebook messenger with my sister back home and I thought why are we typing? I can save my typing for my papers. So I got her to load her facebook live chat, she did and we connected. I had some awesome laughs with her, we got to have some good old sister sort of fun... the kind of fun that only sisters know how to have.

I was telling my sis that I finally cooked up a decent meal here, she asked what I cooked "kangaroo?" I laughed at her and said "no, chicken." She gestured quotation marks and said "chicken?"... trying to indicate that I think I'm eating chicken but it could be anything! lol

Yup this is split chicken with lemon, pepper and garlic simmered in chicken broth and cabbage, along with pineapple rice and veggies. It was delicious, I've frozen a few meals of this and have leftovers for dinner tomorrow... the cost for 4 meals was about $11 - $12, now how's that for economical?

Yes Cathy it is chicken... see chicken, not "chicken". :-)

Mates

Mates are those who are there for you, regardless of what transpires in life. Today while I was down at the beach I shot some photos of mates.

Mates make plans together,

... they encourage one another,

pray for you to safely arrive at your destination,

and will be there waiting to ensure all goes well,

not only today, but in the future as well.

True mates stick together... even when they outgrow childish games.

Personally I think it would have been awesome if these older boys went to join in the fun with the younger fellas, but I guess it's not cool anymore when one hits a certain age...pity, these young lads look rather bored.

A Bwords Life

Today I had a course on child safety, it was rather interesting I must say. When I was at the Uni some other day (my days are all confused now) we spotted these bwords (birds is how we say this in Canada...lol) and I knew I had to take my camera back there with me, so that I did today and am I ever glad I did!

These bwords are gorgeous, I can't figure out how to spell it how they say gorgeous, but it's so cute! Goorgus... that's my feeble attempt. :-)

Again I had a really tough time deciding which photos to post, but it's late so I'll only post two... for now.

I know this following bird is a cockatoo, I think the one above is a parrot, but I haven't googled it yet to find out for certain and I don't want to look stupid so I won't... ooops I just did!

There's a lot of firsts for me coming on this adventure, I'm totally enjoying every minute of it... even staying in on a Friday evening and doing a bit of reading. I know the beach waits for me and I will visit it again real soon.

It really is a bwords life for me, I'm free as can be, for now.

Need Recipes Please

This student living has challenges, for example, this is what I have to cook on...

There's no oven, just a small microwave.

I had to buy something to cook with, here's what I have...

Yes, now I can make a meal but I don't like fried foods and I don't eat pasta hardly ever so that's pretty much out of the question. I went out shopping, keep in mind that I'm only here for 4 months so I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on cookware. I found this for a heck of a good deal...

I was looking at crock pots, but I figured that a large electric skillet could also cook up what a crock pot can and then some. Now I'm looking for recipes to try, does anybody have any suggestions? I'm thinking simmering things or if I really wanted to I could probably make some type of soup or stew, bit it's too warm for that right now.

I can make a meal for two in this, or three or four, then freeze up the leftovers. I'm thinking this will work and cut down on cooking time, after all I don't want to spend all my time in a kitchen or all my time in books while I'm here... right books, that's what brought me here. I'd best get cracking on them as well! Any suggestions on speed reading as well as cooking? lol

Never Look Back

Today was the day we finally went to a beach, we traveled by tram...

after about 25 minutes we had arrived. I stepped off the tram and this is what I spotted...

I got 'people bumps' (formerly known as goosebumps), I had arrived, there it was, the ocean! Might I be in paradise?

There was the water...

Sand, glorious sand, it was like sinking into Egyptian cotton, warm glorious satin. My feet were elated, my heart danced...

This can't be a dream, the seagulls are here, they're making this all so real, maybe even surreal...

I looked forward, never wanting to look back...

Yesterday is history, I'm not too sure what's on the horizon; what I know for certain is the very moment I was blessed with, there here and the now. I experienced a moment in time to live like there was no tomorrow, live with no regrets, and be grateful for each second of my time.

UniSA

Today it was time to start getting organized, I found out today that our first class is on Friday and it's an all day class. We went to the university to get our student ID's, schedules and a few other small things had to be looked after.

This is all so surreal, don't anybody pinch me just encase I am dreaming!

This is where we'll be studying at, it's the Magill campus and it's beautiful! On Sunday when we went out with a few of the ladies on staff in the social work department, one of them told us that this building here was someone's house at one time. The house and surrounding land was left to the education department and the main house is now home to human resources.

We went inside trying to figure out where we were supposed to be and it's beautiful! I told my roommate that it smelled like we should be super intelligent to be in that house... we laughed and found where we were supposed to be.

All is well in my world.

Way Too Cool

I talked to my granddaughter this afternoon on Skype, that was way too cool. She looks like such a big girl now, she's sure growing. I can't even imagine how much will change in her young precious life within the next 4 months; all I know is tonight I'm going to thank God for modern technology!

This afternoon it was time to go out and look after some business and pick up food. We were walking through the mall and I first heard this beautiful music, I looked to see where it was coming from. There was this guy playing a flute, he was amazing... the music was so beautiful and ... well here, see for yourself.

The sun is shining right on his arm, yup, he's got the tattoos and all. Never judge a book by its cover eh? Now if this isn't way too cool, I don't know what is!

One last way too cool thing which happened today, I've got a new buddy...

Isn't he just way too cool? :-)

The Crush Festival

My roomie and myself were invited by some of the staff from the Uni to attend the Crush Festival today, what an amazing day! We stopped off at three different events, the photos pretty much say it all. I'll try to limit myself tonight and not get too carried away with posting photos; between the new lens and the amazing scenery it's hard to stop snapping away!

The Crush Festival is a wine tasting event, you buy a glass at the first place you stop at and your wine glass travels from place to place with you. I can't comment on the wines as I don't consume alcohol; the day was a blast just the same. The ladies from the Uni sure know how to have a good time!

So here goes... the first wine tasting place we stopped off at was Mt. Lofty House, an extraordinary house I must say.

The view from the top of the hill (I think they called it the hills), this is the highest peak in the hills according to our hosts.

I was amazed by this view, I've only ever seen something like this in the movies!

The next stop involved food...

There were a few interesting dishes, this was a beef pate, or something like it.

On the way to our next destination we stopped off for petro, there were a few bikers there and somehow I told the ladies I was going to get a photo of an Australian biker... so that I did! He even told me to make it quick, well that is until I told him that Australian bikers put Sons of Anarchy to shame. ;-)

Again, there was some amazing scenery at our final destination...

Then I spotted it, a real classic! I only wish I had this to drive while I'm here.

The music from place to place changed, the first stop it was live classical, the second stop it was lively dj music and at this final stop there was a live band crooning out 50's and 60's old rock and roll tunes.

And to end the story of my day, on the drive home we spotted a Koala, it was on the side of the road; they are so darned cute. This was a moment I only wish I had my camera in my hand. No dramas, there'll be other opportunities I'm sure.

The Market

Today my roommates ... right my roommate has finally arrived! Anyways, her friend who has lived here for a year and a half showed us where the Central Market is. This is a fantastic place to shop, a bit aggressive, but tons of fun nonetheless.

Saturday afternoon around 2pm is the best time to shop, the vendors don't want to have to pack things up to take home so they start selling it off. There's a few vendors in the streets cooking up some delicacies, I tried a chicken skewer and it was delicious.

There's a yoghurt shop in this market and I thought I'd try some strawberry rhubarb for something unique and different.

I tucked this away in the fridge when I got home and remembered it a few hours later. I had one taste and trust me when I say it was hard to put back in the fridge. This is by far the absolute best yoghurt I have ever tasted, it's low fat as well. Sure it's on the expensive side... but I'm worth it! :-)

If you're ever in Adelaide, the Central Market is a must. I was just reading online that there's over 80 stalls. You won't leave empty handed, that's almost a guarantee.

Australia Day - Part 2

For those who might have missed my last post, I posted about Australia day. I have way to many photos to share them all and I'm having problems deciding which ones to post so I split up the posting so that one post didn't take forever to load.

... now where was I? Oh right, I was at the parade!

There were some amazing vehicles which went through the parade, I'll post a few for car enthusiasts.

I was darn near lying on the pavement, when I seen this next one coming at me through my lens I hoped they had brakes!

After the parade there was a huge festival in the park, approximately 30,000 people where in attendance. The music was good, the weather was fantastic and the city was generous, it was a free concert.

The performer here is Stan Walker, the other performer was Ricki-Lee. There were a few too many people for my liking so I walked across the water... not literally, but I went over a bridge, down a path and found some amazing spots for photos.

It started to get dark enough for some nice reflections, I only wish I would have packed my tripod but next time I know to take things out of my suitcase and bring it, clothes are over rated in this heat anyways!

And this is how I chose to spend Australia Day, my 4th day in this beautiful city.

To any of my blogger friends who are Australian and celebrated this day, I hope you had half the fun I did and enjoyed each moment of your day. You live in an amazing country, one I'm looking forward to seeing and experiencing plenty more of.

Australia Day

I've had a really hard time deciding what to post for Australia's special day, what I'm going to do is split up this event as I had an amazing jam packed day. If I post it all on one it would take 5 hours to upload a single post from me... I won't do that to any of you!

Hmmm what do I start with here? That's the one problem of taking soooo many photos... well here goes.

This morning I got up and went out to the patio, at 7:30 in the morning people were still partying from the night before. (Red I thought of you when I shot this photo, not for the partying aspect, for the name. :-))

I think that I just clued in to something, it's cooler at night so maybe this is why people are out all night long... they must sleep half the day away when it's so hot out. That's my theory.

So from the leftover people from the night before who started the celebration early, it was off to the mall area where there were performers, there were some amazing shows!

This young lady is off to Romania later this year to compete, from what I witnessed she's a sure bet!

There were others, but as I mentioned it was a full day and I have way to many photos to choose from. Next it was off to watch the parade... oops, on my way to the parade I finally got a photo of myself!

The Apartment

This is a good one, I'm going to talk about my apartment and area and I haven't even shot photos of my apartment yet... anyways, yesterday after shopping and getting myself good and lost I managed to find my place after a few hours.

Today I got up with the birds, literally...

The apartment is right downtown Adelaide, it's quite the area, but thankfully we're on the 5th floor so the noise in the area is down to a dull roar. We have a common area on the 7th floor with a huge patio and I've discovered it's a great to take photos from. The reason I got up so early is I wanted to capture a sunrise and I figured I'd be alone on the huge patio. I was right, the young 'uns must have all still been in bed.

I'd almost forgotten how much I love early mornings, while the world still sleeps it's so peaceful. There was very little movement as I looked at the streets below, however, there was movement above.

Looking to the right and down this is what I spotted. What I thought of my apartment was put into a different perspective all of a sudden.

I wonder where this road leads to, another adventure for another day.

... and I ventured back to my room, to start my day. Looking out my bedroom window and down this is my view. I don't think that I'll be wistfully daydreaming out the window, soon it's going to be time to hit the books... not quite yet, but soon enough.

This view will help me to stay focused, I hope.

The Journey

I'm so confused time wise with this trip, I left Edmonton on January 21st at 1:15pm. I flew to Vancouver and had a 4 hour layover. I then boarded Air New Zealand, we left at 6:45pm. It was a long flight, but seeing this sunrise was amazing. This was at the Auckland NZ airport.

I was back on the plane in no time at all, the sun was shining and this flight was amazing. There was no turbulence, not like the previous flight where most of my tea was on my tray.

After a few hours, there it was, I was seeing Australia for the first time.

The feeling was surreal, I've always dreamed of visiting Australia and here I was looking down on my home away from home for the next 4 1/2 months.

I was getting so close... and when it seemed like the wing of the plane was going to touch that water as it turned to land in Adelaide I almost freaked out, I couldn't be this close just to never arrive!

Thankfully the pilot knew what he was doing and we arrived without incident... to be continued.

Where to Start?

Wow, it's been a busy few days getting set up in my apartment, that was a lot of trips back and forth to the Rundle Mall area, the good thing is I know my way there very well now and just getting my bearings straight has involved getting lost a few times, blisters upon blisters and ya... it's been a few days since I've posted so I'll go back and backtrack.

I booked in to my hotel where I spent my first night in Adeliade. The hotel was nice but there was no internet connection in the rooms. Right, I think I've blogged about that already. I went out for a walk after I dropped off my luggage, it was super hot and I was wiped... that's when I realized what jet lag really is.

While out on my walk I snapped a few photos. What I find interesting is there are no back alleys here, they're lanes with names and businesses, or in my case at the hotel it was the entrance.

This city apparently is renowned for their churches, there's plenty of them and they're amazing... the ones I've seen thus far.

I felt how small I really an in the big picture of life looking up at this church, the feeling was humbling, yet powerful.

The saying under this says:

"Let us rejoice and thank God for giving us such solid proofs of His Love"

I have arrived...

I've Arrived!

Well here I sit in Adelaide, Australia; it's beautiful,but hot as I'd imagined it would be. Yesterday I went straight from the airport to my hotel, I arrived here around 10:30am. I went for a wee bit of a walk, snapped a few photos then came back to lie down for a bit. I woke up and it was midnight! I slept my day away. I've never experienced jet lag, not until yesterday that is and it's exhausting! lol I have no internet in my hotel room, I'm not paying $5.95 for a half hour of connection, but hopefully today when I get to my apartment I'll be able to connect with the world again. I have a lot to do so I'd best get to it... it's just too bad the rest of this city is still asleep!

Last Post From Canada for a While

I was debating what to post, my good camera is all packed and ready to go, as are most of my things I want to take, and I decided on this to post. Almost Ready

It's been a hectic couple of weeks getting ready to go on this excursion to Australia, but I'm starting to feel like I'm almost ready. Today it was time for a pedicure. I received a gift certificate from my son Derek for my Christmas gift to my favorite place to get my feet pampered.

The lady who does my pedicures wasn't in a rush today, she asked me if I wanted to soak a bit longer so I took advantage of this as I sat in one of those self massage chairs.

Ahhhhh, heavenly!

What is generally a one hour pedicure took two hours today. This lady took her time, gave me an extra long massage and I can say this was by far the BEST pedicure I've ever had. I even nodded off for a bit, it was that amazing!

I must say, it was strange getting a pedicure in the middle of winter, generally this is a spring/summer treat for me. Now I can wear my sandals as soon as I get to Australia and not worry about how my feet look, they now look marvelous! ;-)

Do's and Do Nots

It was another freezing cold day, literally freezing!

Here's some "do's" and "do nots" for days this cold.

Do Not leave your bottle of water in the car, it will freeze on you.

Do go for a hot bowl of soup in a quaint restaurant.

Do go for a massage, make sure the masseuse has a heated bed!

Do Not take up more space than you need with your vehicle, other people want to park too!

(Some people with trucks think they need two spaces... duh!)

And finally, DO pack for a trip to someplace warm!

I'm getting there; decisions, decisions.

Brrrrrr

Is it ever cold! Yup, winter's definitely here and it's come in with a vengeance. It's the kind of weather where a person doesn't walk to their vehicle, they run.

Take this temperature, -28c, add a few more degrees and that takes into account the wind chill. So with those calculations it had to be about -35c today. I received an email from Adelaide, where I'm going to be next week, yesterday it was 39c there. That's a huge difference, I'm curious how I'm going to adjust ... I'm sure I'll find a way. I'm just grateful I'm not coming from 39c to what's going on here, I'd literally freeze!

I apologize to all of you, I've been extremely busy and haven't had time to make it to visit all of your blogs. I shall return when I'm a bit more organized... oh, one good thing, my last final was written today, that's out of the way now so I can focus on other things! Yipeeee!

Butterflies

A very dear friend stopped by today for a visit, this was a very nice surprise. This friend of mine, Dar, brought me a beautiful gift, it's a butterfly. She shared with me that when she met me I was still in the cocoon stage, now I've blossomed into a beautiful butterfly and this is why she picked this for me. She told me to keep flying, me, being the smarty pants I can be, asked her if she meant that in the literal sense!

I love this butterfly and I will wear it on my chain, it will always remind me to continue to grow as an individual, it will also remind me to face my fears and soar past them.

Thank you Dar, this is beautiful, just like you are!

Family

There's nothing better in the world than spending quality time with those you love. I had the family over tonight for dinner and it was a wonderful time.

This photo is of my oldest son, his wife, and my beautiful granddaughter. I was so busy visiting I actually forgot to take more photos, that's sure not like me!

This will be the last time I see some of those who are closest to me for 4 1/2 months. After most everybody left I was sharing with my daughter how much I'm going to miss Elyssa, tears came to my eyes and I'm not even gone yet. When I return from my trip, I can't even imagine how happy I'm going to be to see not only my granddaughter, but my children as well. It'll be one happy reunion that's for sure!

Great Friends

I've been trying to visit with as many of my friends as I can before I leave. Tonight two near and dear friends and myself went out to Moxie's, it's the same place I went with my sisters last week. The food was delicious, the company phenomenal.

This is who I call Ger, it was his idea to take me out to dinner, this was his Christmas gift to me. Thanks Ger!

Johnny is also an amazing friend, he's like a Dad to me, I even call him Dad we're that close.

Right, we got our winter tonight. It's cold out, the wind is blowing and it's snowing like crazy. Now it's time to get on that plane and get the heck outta here! :-)

Preparation

I have a ton of things to get done before I leave on my trip, today was spent knocking a few things off my list. I thought it would be a good day to wash my car.

By Sunday the temperature is supposed to drop down to our "normal" winter weather, -20 something. Today it was around 2c, the locks shouldn't freeze overnight, or at least I hope they don't!

Out For Dinner

Tonight I had been invited out for dinner with some of the ladies who are involved with Ask Your Auntie. I've done photos for them in the past and have made some amazing friends through volunteering a wee bit of my time.

So I leave the house at 4:30pm, we were to meet clear across the city from where I live at 5pm. I don't know how I made it to the restaurant by 5 but I did.

I went in, looked around and none of the other ladies were there yet. I sat in the front lobby and waited about 15 minutes, shot a few photos...

I texted a few people and then my phone rings... it was the lady who arranged the dinner asking me if I was going to be much longer. I told her I was at the restaurant, she said they were there as well. I checked the restaurant side once again and told her that I didn't see them. I was at the wrong restaurant! The restaurant we were to meet at was the Olive Garden, just up the street. I knew that and here I was at Chili's. Some days I tell ya!

Coffee Table Books

I ordered my blog book this past weekend, I think it was on Saturday, and the book arrived today! I was hoping it would get here before I leave on my trip, now I have time to browse through it and revisit some of last year, if time permits that is.

I chose this photo for the front of my book, I love the colors in it and I'm smiling for a change! ;-)

For the back of my book, this year I chose one of my turtle photos. Anybody who has been following my blog for some time now knows I love turtles. Slow and steady wins the race!

Affirmation Bracelet

Today I heard the mailman open the mailbox and deposit something into it, I was in no big rush to go check the mail as I wasn't expecting anything. Much to my surprise when I finally checked in the box there was a package from Australia! Davine sent me an Affirmation Bracelet and it's extremely beautiful. I am deeply touched, this gift is just what I need going into this final stretch of completing my degree.

Today I went out for lunch with two of my sisters and my three nephews. I'm trying to visit with as many family and friends as I can before I leave in two weeks and my youngest sister suggested we do lunch. My youngest nephew, Eddie, ordered dessert and what a dessert it was!

Team Canada

The World Junior Hockey Championship is being played in Edmonton this year. Tonight's game was between Canada and Russia. TSN reports "Team Canada's comeback bid from a five goal deficit fell just short as Russia held on for a 6-5 win and advanced to World Junior Championship final. Russia will play Sweden for the gold medal, while Canada will take on Finland for bronze."

As I was driving to work today I felt compelled to take this photo, this is a part of our team spirit. Edmonton has the best, loudest, most loyal fans going... this I'm sure of!

It's just crazy to think that it's January 3rd and there is hardly any snow... just crazy I tell ya!

Am I Pretty Now?

I'm trying to get everything in order before my trip, today it was Abbie's turn, I took her in for her shampoo and cut.

We have the same conversation every single time I take her in. She looks at me and asks: "Am I pretty now?"

I respond: "Abbie you're the cutest dog I've ever seen and I love you." I pet her a wee bit and we head for home. Abbie has tons of personality, I'm going to miss my puppy while I'm away.

It's In The Box

It's funny how children are, they seem to put the toys aside and play with the box it came in. When we were opening Christmas gifts Elyssa LOVED her new toy box we bought her. She was just chilling out on her new toy box and got mad when her Daddy and Uncle were packing it out to their vehicle.

On Wednesday I spotted an ottoman which fits nicely by the front door, it's going to serve as a bench for people to sit on while putting on their shoes and a toy box for Elyssa's toys she keeps here.

I had the box this came in sitting in the living room waiting to be moved downstairs. Elyssa spent the night with me last night and this morning what she wanted to play with wasn't toys...

... she was quite content watching TV in the box! Funny girl.

The Flight

After spending countless hours online trying to book a flight to Australia, yesterday I finally said the heck with it and went to see a travel agent. Today I'm breathing a sigh of relief, my flight is booked and I'm flying out on January 21st. I was surprised to learn that there wasn't even a price difference between booking online and going through a travel agent, a very nice surprise I might add!

I have one person to thank for all of this, my boyfriend is sponsoring me to go on this trip, without him this wouldn't be possible. A huge thank you sent out to you Herb, you're helping make my dreams come true!

Now the Real Shopping Begins

I've been out all day running errands, trying to get everything ready to head out to Australia and my flight isn't even booked yet. I went to a travel agent today, she's working on it, so that's one less thing for me to do. I've also started shopping for summer clothes, you know how tough that is when we're in the middle of winter... if you can even call what we're experiencing winter (shhhh I didn't just say that, I don't want to jinx us! lol). I did manage to find a few items I need... okay, truth be told, I bought some new clothing I want and a new purse; every lady NEEDS a new purse to travel... right ladies?

Now it's time to get some rest, tomorrow is another interesting day. Never a dull moment in my world. :-)

How often do you wonder why we try to enhance our appearance, or do you do this? I don't dye my hair yet, however I get streaks to enhance the color of my dark brown curly hair. I have the most amazing hairdresser, she comes in to my home and gives me one heck of a good deal. Christmas Trains

I've always wanted a Christmas train, mind you I've always wanted a train period. Tonight I decided to go out and do a bit of shopping, if the stores weren't too busy I was going to venture in, surprisingly enough they weren't bad. I found the Christmas train on sale for half price, all of the Christmas items go on sale for half price on Boxing Day.

I wanted to put it together tonight but it'll wait until tomorrow, I'm holidayed out and need to get some sleep!

There's a few other Christmas items I liked, I'm going to gamble that the price will go down even further yet. I'll check back in two days and see if they even have any of the items I want. The joy of the week after Christmas, it's a real gamble on things I want but don't need so I'm willing to gamble the one item in particular will go down to 75% off. If they sell out oh well, such is life.

I'm Legal

It was suggested by the University in Australia that I obtain an International Driving Permit, today I set out to do just that. I didn't realize that my Canadian license was going to expire while I'm away, so I had to go and renew this, then back over to AMA to get this permit. It took a wee bit of doing, but it only took a few hours and now I'm legal to drive in a lot of different counties. These are valid for one year, hmmm I wonder where I can go next. :-)

I've been extremely busy on this end, but I'll catch up to your welcomed comments and your blogs as soon as time permits.

Tonight when I was out getting groceries, I couldn't help but notice the amazing sunset. It was beautiful! The weird part is that it was only about 4:30pm.

Busy as a Bee

... and here I thought I'd get some rest now that classes are officially done, wrong! I left my humble abode at 11am, met up with my sister downtown, visited and exchanged baked goodies, then it was off to my old college. They wanted to give me the poster they made of me a few years back. Now what in the heck am I going to do with this?

Then I went to drop off the disc for the photos I shot this weekend, after this I delivered some baked goodies to some friends, then it was off to shopping at the busiest mall in Edmonton. I guess I just had to get in there to feel the craziness of Christmas shopping, I'm done all my shopping so I bought new PJ's for myself... sheeesh. The mall entrance is decorated beautifully.

There were a few more stops, finally I arrived back home around 9pm... what a day but at least my gifts and cards are all dropped off. Now I can relax... I think.

And one final happy note, try to remember this throughout this holiday season...

Stairs of Success

Today, after I wrote my last in class final, I was eager to leave the University. However, as I approached the stairwell, I realized this could very well be the last time I ever see these stairs. I paused, snapped a photo, and climbed the stairs to success.... another successful semester completed!

This makes 6 out of the 7 courses I studied this semester complete. I have one essay left and one more final in the one correspondence course to finish up. I highly recommend to anyone who is ever even thinking of doing 7 courses in one semester, DON'T DO IT! It's crazy making, sheer insanity, you'll lose tons of sleep, you may need anti-anxiety medication (thankfully I learned other methods of coping with the stress), your diet goes to hell, and ya, just don't do it! It can be done, but it's all a blur.

Expensive Garbage

Today I cleaned out most of my binders; the notes, journals, and handouts are all filed. This has to be one of the most expensive bags of garbage I've ever put into my recycle bin. When you add in the cost of tuition, books, and all of the extra charges the universities ding you for information it adds up in a hurry.

I only wish I had a fireplace tonight, I'd LOVE to watch this all burn! Yup, it's time for a break; a hard earned, well deserved break...after my final tomorrow that is.

Tonight I went out to do some volunteer work, after all 'tis the season for offering a hand. Mind you any season is a good time to volunteer. I packed up my trusty camera and off I went to take photos for the Native Friendship Centers annual Christmas Dinner. The meal was fantastic, the entertainment was amazing, and I had an awesome evening. Oh, right, I also shot quite a few photos, got hypnotized and ... ah, I won't go into detail about this one, I will however say I found myself doing things I would never do in public, but it was all in good fun!

Me, remembering some of the silly things I did! lol

Tomorrow is more volunteer time, it's the children's Christmas party and Santa will be there! I wonder if I sit on Santas lap if I'll get my Christmas wish... hmmm I'm going to have to check it out.

Procrastination

I don't know why I put off my studies off until the last minute but this has been my pattern even after 4 1/2 years of studies. I have an exam on Friday and I've kept myself so busy procrastinating that now I'll be cramming for the next day. The good thing about this is that I did more baking today...

Naturally a taste for the baker.

Gifts are wrapped, laundry is done and finally at 10pm I opened the books.

It's time to get some notes made, memorize things which I'll commit to memory long enough to write an exam and forget most of it on the way out the doors of the University.

The one good thing about procrastination is I keep myself so busy I don't feel guilty about putting the studies off AND I have less to do to prepare for Christmas. (How's that for justification? ;-)) Maybe I'll even have a few days rest before Christmas Eve... I can't even imagine!

More Courses

Perogies

Today was perogie making day and what a day it was. I went over to my son and his wife's place, my daughter joined in, and between four of us we made 20 dozen perogies. Now that's out of the way it's time to get the tree up tomorrow, or finish decorating it, then I'd best start studying for my finals; they're coming up way too soon!

My son Shayne, I'm so glad that he suggested I teach them how to make perogies, that was 3 years ago and now it's become tradition to spend one day before Christmas getting this done. It sure goes much faster with all the extra hands.

Memorable Christmas Party

Once again this year we catered at West Edmonton Mall for a children's Christmas party; the only difference was last year there were about 600 people in attendance, this year there was just over 1000. It's a simple menu, hot dogs, chicken strips, beverages, veggie trays, baked goodies and chips, but with just over 1000 people there's never a dull moment!

The Christmas party was held at Galaxy Land, this is a huge indoor amusement park. The children sure enjoy the three hours of non-stop fun. Mind you so do I, then again I'm just a big kid at heart. :-)

The swings brought squeals of delight.

This is the Mind Bender, if you go on it once you'll see why it's called this. I was on it about 18 years ago, that was enough of that nonsense for one lifetime!

Galaxy Land is quite the attraction, they have rides for all ages with play areas for younger children. I personally think this is a fantastic gift to the children, in lieu of gifts the company hosts this party every year, the rent the entire area for 3 hours and provide lunch and snacks. This is definitely a Christmas for the children to remember.

It's Prep Time

Today went almost as well as I had planned, there was only one wee problem, there wasn't enough hours in my day. I was up bright and early and started my Christmas baking and I brought up all the Christmas decorations from the basement in hopes to have my tree up and house decorated today. I got an awesome head start on the baking.

I made Matrimonial Squares (aka Date Squares), Butter Tart Squares, Black Forest Cookies, Nanaimo Bars, Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, M&M cookies, and I'm all baked out for now. If you want the recipe I use for my Nanaimo Bars just click and enlarge the following photo. I've used this recipe since I was 21 years old and it's a huge hit. I make it in foil pans, it's much easier to peel the foil back to cut the squares.

Now hopefully after work tomorrow I can get this all sorted out.

One thing at a time, okay ten things at a time, and it's going to be looking a whole lot like Christmas in my home. Have a fantastic Saturday!

Inspiration

Little did my oldest son know when he bought me a frame for my first grad that this would turn into an inspiration. This frame happens to have room for 3 photos; I added my first grad photo from my upgrading in 2008 and carried on. Two years later I was able to add my photo from earning my social work diploma, this was in 2010. June of 2012 I can complete this frame, I'll have my degree!

Whenever I'd be sitting at my desk into the wee hours of the morning, writing the never ending papers, feeling like giving up, I'd glance over at this frame which sits on my desk. I'd take a few deep breaths, say a wee prayer, and think about how badly I wanted to fill up this frame, then I'd continue to push forward.

The frame says: "Life is an opportunity, embrace it." And that I have.

Ever since a blogger friend suggested a TV show, I've been watching it faithfully. I LOVE it! I think that I went through the first three seasons in less than a week, I was hooked, still am as a matter of fact. I like the show so much I've even bought the T-shirt.

Now this T-Shirt isn't merely any old T-shirt; it's an official Sons of Anarchy T-shirt. I had to order it online; you can't buy these just anywhere. This shirt even made my son a wee bit envious, little does he know I ordered two, one in him on his birthday.

Eat and Run

Today it was a really quick lunch, I stopped off between classes and grabbed some fruit and a cuppa tea. I'm trying to eat healthy, it's time to shed the few excess student pounds.

5th Annual Christmas Party

Today we had out annual family get together for the holidays. The food was delicious, (we do a potluck) and the gift exchange was a blast, as it always is. It was so nice to spend an afternoon with family again.

There was about 30 of us, only a few family members weren't able to make it.

Beat The Clock

I did it! The essay I was attempting to have done by midnight has been sent in and does it ever feel awesome! I started this paper last night; I wrote one page, pulled my research and mapped out the paper in my mind, then I called it a night. I got up this morning, and somehow it all came together. I was trying to beat the clock all day today; with perseverance, blood, sweat, and tears, I shocked myself. Before I knew it I was over the 2500 words, I had to tighten the paper up a bit, and I could have said more than the allotted 10 pages. When I clicked send I glanced at the time, it wasn't even 6pm... hmmm, now I wonder what the mark on this one will be like. That's 3 of the 7 courses I've taken this semester finished.

One wee word of advice, if anyone out there is ever thinking of doing 7 courses in one semester, DON'T! Not unless you want to give up the finer things in life; things such as sleeping, eating, and spending time with those who are near and dear to you.

Our cities finest have reverted back to the old style black and white police cars, not all of them are switched over yet, some are still all white. I think this looks pretty awesome, reminds me of days long ago.

I've been sitting at my computer far too long today, I've been writing, researching, taking the odd break, then getting right back at it. Dinner tonight consisted of something I tossed in the microwave, it actually wasn't all that bad, or so I'll tell myself. I just doused it in hot sauce and brought the toss away bowl up to my desk and continued to work.

The marks are hanging in there, in most courses anyways. This one was for a group project, 3 of us busted out butts to get this presentation done but it paid off. I'm finished one class, only 6 more to wrap up and it's a done deal. There's a very dim light at the end of the tunnel, as each assignment is completed it's getting a wee bit brighter.

Thank goodness for microwavable food, it beats the heck out of a protein shake for dinner... well some days it does.

My Little Doll

Tonight my oldest son and his wife cooked up the most amazing meal, we had prime rib and was it ever tasty. It was my sons first attempt at cooking a prime rib roast but I was so impressed I had to have a wee bit more. Great job Shayne and Sandy!

Not only was the food scrumptious I was blessed to spend some time with my little princess Elyssa, she's such an adorable child whom I totally love to bits.

"Well puppy, it's just you and me and one cracker, you want the first bite?"

I was playing around with some of the photos I took of Elyssa tonight and came up with this next one which I'll send to my son and daughter-in-law, I love the way it turned out.

My granddaughter is fascinated with my camera, I know she's a bit young but what the heck, I'm getting her started with her own camera this Christmas. I can spend time with her taking photos then I'll upload them to my computer for her to take a look at. I want to give this to her now to see what she thinks of it... but I'll wait.

It amazes me the things they have for children these days, a far cry from the one doll I remember having as a youngster. For Christmas I generally got clothes, I always loved the new dresses I'd get; heck, I'd still love to get clothes, now I know where I get it from! Childhood memories.

The Catering Begins

Today I went to help a really good friend with a catering job; this friend used to be my boss and it wasn't until I was back in the apron that I realized just how much I miss cooking at the Club. Today we fed approximately 80 elderly people, the Ironworkers put on a Christmas dinner every year for their retirees and it's such a fun job to cater.

There's a few more Christmas catering jobs coming up that I'm going to help out with, I hope each one is just as much fun as it was today... mind you whenever I work with my friend we have a blast!

Much Better

I spent the day racing the clock, one which was ticking way too fast. I did however get a major essay written within this past two days and I managed to finally finish up a presentation I'm giving in the morning. I set my alarm for the time the essay was to be emailed in and had forgotten about the alarm...

I had sent my essay in well before the alarm went off, I must have been enjoying my hot bath the first time it notified me...

Now I know it my alarm repeats itself. It's a good thing the paper was sent in before this reminder, anything after midnight wouldn't have been accepted. I feel much better and now I can grab a few hours of sleep, it's been another very productive day and I'm wiped.

Not Going Anywhere

It's been so cold lately that my son's car wouldn't start, we had to boost him. The sad part is I don't have a clue how to boost someone with my car, we never did quite figure out where my battery cables are so a friend of my sons came over and helped him get his car going.

I love my little car, thankfully it starts no problem. It's supposed to warm up this week so I shouldn't have to plug in, or at least I hope not!

It was a close call tonight getting to my bus. I had the hotel call me a taxi at 5:00p.m., they said 10-15 minutes waiting time, no worries as my bus didn't leave until 6:15. I had the hotel call the cab company back at 5:30, the taxi was on it's way they said. I called the bus at 5:45 hoping my bus was running late... no such luck. I was ready to freak out when this taxi driver comes into the hotel looking for Annette, well call me Annette, I was whisked off to my bus and got there with about 3 minutes to spare. That was too close for comfort!

Before my stress level went through the roof I snapped a few photos, this reflection caught my eye.

Yup, a tad bit chilly out there (about -28c with the wind chill) and out comes the Christmas decorations.

And there were no other ladies waiting in the lobby for a taxi, so no worries, Annette didn't want a cab as bad as I did I suppose. If she did, sorry Annette, but thank you for calling a taxi!

Red Arrow and Student Sleeping Quarters

Well it was back to Calgary today for my final Integrative Seminar before this semester is over, I'm so glad I booked my trip down here with Red Arrow. With out winter weather upon us and the stress I'm feeling I sure didn't want to drive the 3 hours to get here. I haven't been on a bus in forever, the last time I was on a bus I don't think that I was even old enough to drive... ya, it's been a while. The Red Arrow allowed me to book a seat, I chose a single seat vs. a double, this way I could spend my time with focusing on studies. There's a plug in for my laptop, internet connection and they even have a movie playing for those who have the luxury of sitting back and relaxing. The bus is extremely comfortable, the driver funny and friendly... I'd give this company two thumbs up!

As for the sleeping quarters, I asked if they had a student discount, they do at the hotel on campus but you also get a students room. It's not what I'd expected by no means, but what the heck, tonight I'm so tired all I care about is I have a bed to sleep in.

I found a new pair of runners today which I've fallen in love with. I'm generally not a big name brand type of lady, who can afford to be after being a student for this past 4 1/2 years? I tried these runners on and my feet fell in love, they were on sale so why not? My feet are well worth it, they've carried me around for this many years so I'd best treat them well so they continue to carry me for a lot more years. Now how's that for justifying buying Diesel's?

Maybe wearing these I can keep up to myself. ;-)

It's cold enough now and there's enough snow that I've put away the Reebok's and traded them for my mukluks. I love my mukluks, they keep my feet nice and toasty warm, well unless I get them wet that is.

One Step Towards the Future.

One happy note...I've just finished one of my major essays, I've got a few more of them to knock off, a few more presentations and a few exams and that's it! Now to get from here to there, I will and when I do... hmmm what will I do? Oh right, go away for 5 months then get a job when I get back, an actual job after 5 years of studies, I can't even imagine that.

I went to take a look at the book my friend gave me about Adelaide and lo and behold 3 stamps fell out of the book. I was curious how much it is to mail a letter in Australia as I noticed these stamps are for $1.45, on closer inspection along the side it says International Post. Thank goodness for email and Skype!

Another interesting thing I learned today, my great grandmother had a sister named Adelaide...now is it a coincidence that this is the city I'll be spending 5 months in or is it fate? BTW I don't believe in a coincidence. ;-)

'Tis the season...

We had our first snowfall, I'm grateful that it was late in coming this year as I don't like driving in the snow nor do I like being cold. One would think that I'd be accustomed to this type of weather living in Alberta all my life, I'm not. The older I get the more I detest being cold.

As you can see we didn't get a lot of snow, but it's snow nonetheless. Tomorrow it's supposed to be +1, this should all melt so I won't take out the snow shovel quite yet... I don't want to jinx us! lol

A near and dear friend had two tickets to the Canadian Finals Rodeo, he had invited me to go with him about 6 weeks ago and I'm glad I didn't know how busy I'd be right about now or I would have missed out on this amazing opportunity.

I love the way tonight's event began, it's Remembrance day, a day for us to pay honor to our fallen soldiers. First the cowboys entered...

The cowboys were then joined by some of our soldiers and the bagpipes played Amazing Grace; I must admit it was extremely touching.

Because tonight's show was a "No Photos" event I wasn't able to get nearly the quality of shots I would have liked to, I only had my P&S but nonetheless I'll share a few of my captures.

...and there was so much more. The one event I don't much care for is the bull riding. Those have to be the longest 8 seconds of a cowboys life, either that or the few seconds it takes for them to get out of they way so they don't get stomped by the bull.

The stadium was sold out, we had 6th row seats and it was an amazing event. I'd forgotten just how much I love going to the rodeos... but when did they cowboys get so young? ;-)

A Unexpected Day Off

Today I hurried to get ready and raced out the door to ensure I was to class on time, I got there with 10 minutes to spare. When I arrived I was surprised that I got a parking spot rather close to the building my class is in, not even questioning it I fed my parking meter and went to class. There was nobody, and I mean nobody, in the building. I went all the way down to the university only to find out that today was a day off!

The trip wasn't a total waste, I had set up a meeting with a friend who has been to Australia. I had to wait an hour and a half, I'm glad I had one of my books to read. When my friend showed up she shared with me some of her experiences of her travels and gave me this information booklet on the city I just happen to be going to.

... tomorrow it's off to the rodeo!

I'm having blog withdrawals, I miss posting and I've decided that if I can't take at least a half hour a day for myself that I'm doing something horribly wrong. What's the point of busting my butt if I can't have a wee bit of "me" time during my day? I might not be here every night but I'm going to give it my best shot. So let the sun shine in, we have no white stuff on the ground yet, the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day... less the stupid test I wrote!

I Want My House Back

These studies are enough to drive anybody crazy, everywhere I look it's books, books, and more books!

I've got a stack on my nightstand... a little late night reading when I can stay awake long enough to read.

They're on my bed, I have to keep some off the floor so I can make it to my desk.

It's hard to prioritize, there's just way to much to do. Sometimes I feel like I'm seriously going insane, but thus far I'm not certifiable thankfully. The studies are immensely challenging, I'm in 7 courses, one is almost done, all I have to do for that course is write a final essay but who knows what the topic is going to be... arrrrgh!

Enough of this bickering, I'd best get back to knocking off whatever I can. I guess preparing for another exam on Tuesday would be a good place to continue on.

If you don't see much of me here, which I hope to still make it to post, now you'll know why. I'll be back though whenever time permits or I can sneak in a photo or two... for now I just want these studies done and my house back.

New Shoes

Generally at this time of year when I go out shopping it's for things like winter gloves, boots, scarves... you know the regular winter gear...well not today. I went out shopping when I dropped off my daughters car, she was busy and there's a shoe store really close to where she works so I went to check it out.

It was so odd looking for sandals in November but I figured why not... I'm starting to prepare for Australia, why not start with new sandals?

Sunshine and Pontiac's

The sun was shining down upon us today, looks can be deceiving though. The wind brought with it a chill but I'm not going to complain at all, it's better than what's about to come our way anytime now.

I was also driving my daughters car today, it's a G6. We switched cars last night, tomorrow morning I'm taking her car in to get a few things done to it and we'll switch back tomorrow sometime. Driving Michelle's car makes me want a new vehicle. Her car is so quiet, the stereo system is much better than mine and the ride is so smooth, the funny thing is my G5 and her G6 are both the same year.

Michelle made a great choice when she bought her new car, I love it!

My Little Duck

Elyssa was feeling much better tonight and she got to come trick or treating to Grammy's house, she looked totally adorable!

Elyssa LOVES ducks, she was the cutest wee duck I ever did see. :-)

One of Elyssa's treats was a sticker book of farm animals, little did I know there was a poster size picture of ducks in the book...such a wonderful treat for Elyssa.

Now the pumpkins can be put away, the few decorations I had up can come down and that's it for Halloween for another year, my precious little duck got to have her Halloween after all.

Halloween

I was hoping to be posting a photo of my granddaughter all decked out for Halloween, unfortunately my little princess was sick today. When she's feeling better my son and his wife are still going to dress her up and bring her over, why not? Just 'cause she's sick she shouldn't have to miss out on the fun. We can choose any date we want to celebrate a special event and have our own little party.

Tonight Abbie was eager as could be, she ran to the door every time someone rang the bell; it was almost enough to drive me crazier than I already am! Again this year I didn't get that many children at my door, maybe 35 or so, but that was enough. It's tough to focus on homework when I've got kids ringing the bell and a dog barking. Still in the spirit of what's left of Halloween I wouldn't change a thing.

We cheated, Abbie wore the same costume last year. ;-)
